Mountain biking

St Paul’s Collegiate School offers mountain biking as a summer sport to eight senior students. Riders must have a helmet, drink bottle and bikes that are in good working order and available to attend both evenings. Students also have the opportunity to train at the Rotorua Forest Trails.

Schedule

Tuesdays: Depart from school to one of the following places including some riding on the road. We try to avoid main roads and use cycle paths where possible. 3.45 pm – 5.15 pm approximately.

  • Pukete mountain bike track
  • Hillcrest pump track
  • Through parks and alleyways in the area in search of jumps
  • Wairere jumps
  • Along the river path

* Wednesdays* We join the Hamilton Mountain Bike Club on Wednesday evenings and compete in the Summer Series. This is a 12km cross-country track where we race in the 1-lap sports category.

Students need to register and join the Club U18 for $40. The summer series U16 is $45, 16+ $65, plus a one-off payment for a timing chip of $25. Alternatively, students can pay $15 cash for each Wednesday ride.

The teacher in charge will be take a school van and bike trailer. We will leave school at 5.30 pm and return at approximately 7.30 pm. Race briefing is at 6.10 and racing starts at about 6.20.

Competition

The main competitions that students can compete in are the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Mountain Bike Championships.

Levies

The levy for Mountain Biking is $20. Transportation costs and entry fees for competitions are disbursed to students' accounts as required.
