Colours is the highest award a student can attain in recognition of his or her achievements in a sport. Students eligible to receive a Colours Award are clearly recognised as ‘top’ in their sport and the awards are traditionally made at the annual Sports Awards function. The Colours Committee consists of the following:
- Chairman – Headmaster
- Secretary – Assistant Headmaster
- Members – Director of Sport and Sports Administrator
Full Sports Colours

Candidates for the award of Full Colours shall have in all cases proven to be exemplary role models. In the opinion of the Colours Committee, they must meet the highest standards of behaviour both in and out of the classroom before being eligible for these awards. In addition to this candidates will have to:
1. Compete in a senior competition (U17 or higher)
2. Consistently display outstanding ability and commitment to their chosen sporting activity
3. Show outstanding sportsmanship on and off the field
4. Represent St Paul’s first team in the sport for which they receive colours
5. Maintain a fortnightly effort GPA of 3 and above for three terms prior to the awarding of colours
6. Meet the following criteria as it relates to his/her sport
Individual competition:
- Finish in 1st place at a Waikato Secondary School event, or
- Finish in the top 3 at a North Island Secondary School event, or
- Finish in the top 6 at a National Secondary School event, or
- Be a member of a relay team that finishes in the top 3 at a National Secondary School event, or
- Gain provincial representative honours (U17 or higher) in the highest possible team or, in the opinion of his/her coach, reach a standard equivalent to this.
Team sports:
Gain provincial representative honours (U17 or higher) in the highest possible team or, in the opinion of his/her coach, reach a standard equivalent to this.
Rowing:
Compete at U17 or higher level and finish in the top 3 in the North Island Secondary Schools Championships, or
finish in the top 6 at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships (Maadi Cup Regatta).
Note: Colours are awarded at the sole discretion of the colours committee, in consultation with St Paul’s Collegiate School staff.
Junior Sports Colours
Candidates for the award of Junior Colours shall have in all cases proven to be exemplary role models. In the opinion of the Colours Committee, they must meet the highest standards of behaviour both in and out of the classroom before being eligible for these awards. Junior Colours are only awarded to students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Candidates must meet similar criteria to those required for Full Colours.
Service Tie for Sport
This award is for students who have involved themselves to a marked degree in any one of the following areas:
1. Coached or assisted with refereeing or umpiring
2. Organisation of sport
3. Control or maintenance of sports gear
4. Shown exceptional leadership below First Team level or in a Senior Team not in premier competition
5. Only students in Year 13 would usually be considered for this award.
Caps
Caps may be awarded to students involved in Senior team sports. The awards are made at the discretion of the coach, but will generally reflect outstanding achievement in the particular sport, and the length of time a player has been in the team. Caps are awarded throughout the year.
First XI Cricket Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First XI Cricket coach. In general terms recipients will have played a minimum of 15 games and reached the following performance standard:
1. Batting – two scores of greater than 50
2. Bowling – two bags of 4 or more wickets
3. Wicket-keeping – in the opinion of the Coach and Manager have kept wicket to a high standard for one season
4. All-rounders – can gain credit towards the award of a cap by performing well with both bat and ball. For example one score of 50 and one 4 wicket bag will qualify
First XI Football Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First XI Football coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Boys to have played a minimum of 45 games.
- Girls to have played a minimum of 35 games.
First XV Rugby Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First XV Rugby coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Played a minimum of 20 games in a starting position.
Rowing Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the Director of Rowing and Headmaster. In general terms, the recipients will have displayed the following attributes:
- Outstanding achievement such as an A finalist (in an U18 event) at any of the major regattas.
- Regular crew member in the school’s U18 premier rowing team(s).
- Service and commitment to the club and team.
- Rowed for a minimum of three full seasons (boys) or two full seasons (girls).
First XI Hockey Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First XI Hockey coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Passion for hockey.
- Played a minimum of 50 games in a starting position.
First Team Basketball Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the Teacher in charge/Premier Boys Coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- The player must have gained provincial representative honours (U17 or higher) or, in the opinion of his/her * coach, reached a standard equivalent to this.
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Played a minimum of 50 games.
First Team Lacrosse Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First Team Lacrosse coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level, representing the region at U18 level or higher.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Played a minimum of 30 competition games.
First Team Netball Caps
Awarded at the discretion of the First Team Netball coach. In general terms recipients will have met and consistently displayed the following attributes:
- Skills and talent at an outstanding level.
- Contribution to team spirit.
- Service and commitment to the team.
- Passion for Netball.
- Played a minimum of 50 games.
