St Paul’s Collegiate School is an independent day and boarding secondary school in Hamilton, New Zealand, for students in Years 9–13.
There is no single thing that defines a St Paul’s education. It is the combination of opportunities and experiences that makes the school distinctive: small classes, the unique Tihoi Venture School experience, a considered approach to educating boys and girls, strong academic pathways, boarding and day school life, and specialist programmes that connect learning with the world beyond school.
At the heart of it is knowing students well and giving them opportunities to discover what they are capable of.
Class sizes at St Paul’s are deliberately kept small, with junior classes averaging around 20 students and generally becoming smaller in the senior years.
Smaller classes give teachers the opportunity to know their students, understand how they learn and provide individual support and extension. They also create an environment where students are encouraged to contribute, ask questions and become active participants in their learning.

Tihoi Venture School is one of the most distinctive parts of a St Paul’s education.
Located near Pureora in the central North Island, Tihoi is St Paul’s residential outdoor education campus for Year 10 students. From 2027, boys and girls spend 12 weeks at Tihoi, combining academic learning with outdoor challenges and the experience of living and working closely with others.
Students take part in activities including tramping, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing and navigation, while also continuing their academic studies. Living away from home, without mobile phones and personal devices, encourages students to take responsibility for themselves, contribute to their community and build independence, resilience and confidence.
Tihoi has been part of St Paul’s since 1979 and is much more than a school camp. It is an extended residential and educational experience that forms an important part of a student’s journey through St Paul’s.

St Paul’s is co-educational, with a distinctive approach during the junior years.
Boys and girls in Years 9 and 10 are taught in separate classes for much of their academic programme, while sharing the wider life of the school. In the senior years, students move into co-educational classes.
This structure gives St Paul’s the opportunity to respond to students during the important early secondary years while preparing them to learn and work together as they progress through school and beyond.

St Paul’s brings day and boarding students together within one school community.
Boarding has been part of St Paul’s since the school was established and remains central to school life. Students come from throughout the Waikato and other parts of New Zealand, creating a community that extends well beyond Hamilton.
Boarders are supported by Housemasters, matrons, tutors and other staff, while the wider house system gives both day and boarding students a strong sense of belonging. Houses become smaller communities within the school, bringing students of different ages together through sport, cultural activities, service and everyday school life.

A St Paul’s education includes experiences that encourage students to participate, try something new and discover interests beyond their academic subjects.
Music is part of every student’s introduction to St Paul’s. All Year 9 students learn a musical instrument, regardless of their previous experience. This shared experience helps create a strong music culture within the school and gives every student the opportunity to discover an interest or ability they may not have explored before.
Sport is also an important part of school life. All students participate in at least two sports each year, one in summer and one in winter. The emphasis is not simply on competition or high performance. Regular physical activity, being part of a team and participating alongside others all contribute to student wellbeing and connection.
Beyond music and sport, students can become involved in performing and visual arts, cultural activities, service and leadership. The school’s Anglican character provides a foundation for its values and community life, while the house system gives students another place to belong, participate and contribute.
Not every student will find their place in the same way. The breadth of school life gives students opportunities to discover new interests, develop existing strengths and become involved in their community.
