Young swimmer adds to medal tally

Thomas Griffin competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Swimming Championships over the weekend. The young swimmer entered the competition with some nerves (competing against a higher age group than usual) but he didn't let this get the better of him – he walked away with four silver medals.

The long course competition attracted 566 competitors from 150 schools. All St Paul’s swimmers achieved personal bests, either beating their national seeding or qualifying time, but the stand-out performer for the day was Griffin.

The 13-year old placed second in two free events, the 200m (2:16:68) and 400m (4:39:92), and two fly events, the 200m (2:28:79) and 100m (1:07:04). He also competed in the 50m fly and the 100m free in which he placed seventh and fifth respectively.

Griffin’s success adds to his medal tally from the New Zealand short course swimming championships where he won the under-13 400m free and placed second in the 200m fly.

Griffin trains 12-hours a week with the St Paul’s swimming club.
