St Paul’s Collegiate School’s 1st XI teams wrapped up the hockey season on a high note, placing fourth in the national Ranking Cup tournament.
This win comes off the back of a successful hockey season for the team who won the Waikato Secondary Schools competition and took the Batholomew Cup from Hamilton Boys High’s two year grasp. The Bartholomew Cup is similar to the Mowascar Cup in school boy rugby, it represents the best of the best in school boy hockey.
Craig Hardman, St Paul’s 1st XI hockey coach said the season was the school’s best yet: “For a small school like St Paul’s to rank in the top four against the bigger all boys school’s shows the talent and determination of our 1st XI team.”
Rueben Andrews was a stand-out for the week and a key player in the 4-1 win against Super Eight champions Palmerston North Boys High School.
After convincingly winning four of the first five matches St Paul’s 1st XI was close to making the final but was knocked out in a nail biting 2-1 match against Westlake Boys High School who went on to win the competition.
Over the course of the week long tournament the 1st XI won four matches, drew twice and lost once. The team scored 27 goals and only conceded 6.
