Teams from St Paul’s Collegiate School attended Winter Tournament Week in August. A heartfelt thanks go to the staff, parents and supporters who went with the students. It was an amazing week with some outstanding results and credit goes to the players for dedication and grit demonstrated throughout the week.
The Netball Premier team dug deep at the Upper North Island Secondary School competition (UNISS) played in Hamilton. The week started with two wins against Massey and Cambridge High Schools followed by four losses against some tough teams. The tide turned on Thursday with a win against Waikato Diocesan 30-21 which qualified the team to play in the top 16. The team had a nail-biting game against Westlake Girls' High School winning 26-25 which placed the team 13th overall.
The First XI Girls' Hockey Team spent the week in Christchurch and played a winning streak after the first game. The team’s wins against Whangarei Girls' High School and Columba College qualified them to play in the Semi-Final against Feilding High School which St Paul’s won 2-1. The team played King’s College in the Marie Fry Trophy Final which resulted in a 1-1 draw; the final result depended on a penalty shoot-out which St Paul’s won 4-3 and became the Marie Fry Trophy champions.
The First XI Boys' Hockey team played in the Rankin Cup Competition in Wellington. The young team showed grit and determination as they lost games by a narrow margin. The team played their last game against Whanganui Collegiate winning 3-1.
It was an exciting week for the First XI Girls' Football in Whangaarei as they played in the Kathy Seaward Tournament. They lost their first game and then won or drew their next five games. Due to point difference, they did not qualify to play in the top eight competition and instead played in the 9-16 round. They had a final game against Aquinas College winning 2-1 finishing 11th in the competition.
The First XI Boys' Football team spent the week in Christchurch having a massive week with some great wins placing them at the start of the week in the top eight round of competition. The players weaved their way through the competition until a loss against Hamilton Boys' High School. St Paul’s faced Selwyn College for the 7th and 8th playoff and won the game 4-2 on penalty shoot-out placing 7th in the country.
Two teams went to Rotorua for basketball. The Junior Team placed 7th which was an exceptional result for the young team. The Senior Team, who were placed in a tough pool, had some trying games. They played a semi-final against Hillcrest High where they lost by just one point and then played Western Heights High School in the playoff winning the game 94-60 placing them 15th in the competition.
The First XV Rugby Team ventured to King’s College in Auckland for two games and had a very close game against King’s College with a loss 24-26 and a win against St Andrew’s College 29-19.
