The Physical Education Department is working at pace with their students with a host of innovative programmes designed to enhance both athletic and leadership skills across all year groups.
Duncan Gundersen, Head of the Department, remarked, "We are dedicated to creating opportunities that not only develop our students' physical abilities but also nurture their leadership qualities. Every initiative this term is a step towards a more confident and capable future."
Year 9 students are diving into an Aquathon challenge, exploring essential fitness components such as heart rates, energy systems, and training methods. Their assessment includes a 200m swim followed by a 1.3km run, complemented by skill development in either Softball (Poiuka) or Touch (Pa Whutupaoro). Mr Gundersen noted, "The Aquathon is a brilliant way for our students to gain a practical understanding of fitness while enjoying the spirit of healthy competition."
In a bid to blend physical education with practical management, Year 10 students are engaging in modified hand-striking games while taking on roles as sports administrators.
"By involving our students in sports administration, we’re providing them with hands-on experience that extends well beyond the traditional classroom,” says Mr Gunderson.
A standout feature this term sees Year 11 and Year 12 students coaching more than 100 Fairfield Intermediate students. Meeting daily on the front fields, these senior students are not only refining their coaching abilities but also developing robust leadership and communication skills. Mr Gundersen observed, "Our senior students are real role models, inspiring younger pupils and honing skills that will benefit them throughout their lives."
Looking ahead to future competitions, Year 13 students are engaging in strategic planning for their chosen sporting events in 2025. They select an activity to compete in and identify key fitness components to improve through structured training. Duncan Gundersen stated, "It’s exciting to see our Year 13 students map out strategies for success. Their commitment and foresight set a strong foundation for their future endeavours."
