It’s been one win after another for hockey player and Year 13 St Paul’s Collegiate School student Garrick du Toit.
Last year he was named in the New Zealand Junior Black Sticks team for 2015/16 while this year he was a member of two national title winning teams: St Paul’s 1st XI that won the secondary school boys title and Midland’s Hockey under-18.
He has also just been awarded a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to the University of Waikato for study in 2017.
The scholarship includes a $10,000 allowance per year for course related costs for his entire undergraduate study and a sports programme that includes a high performance hockey mentor.
He says the criteria for the scholarship was sport success, academic achievement and leadership potential.
The 18-year-old planned to take a back seat in hockey while studying an engineering degree but has since been named in the New Zealand Junior Black Sticks for the 2016/17 year.
