Cole Lucas, a talented mountain biker, was named Waikato Secondary School Sportsman of the Year for biking at an awards ceremony held over the weekend.
Cole was chosen from a pool of students from across the Waikato who compete in biking sports (from BMX to mountain biking).
The Year 11 student won the under-17 downhill event at the 2014 Oceania Mountain Bike Championships held at Mt Hutt in Canterbury during March.
He also competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Mountain Bike event during the same month, again winning the under-17 downhill event.
Cole’s sport certainly isn’t for the faint hearted. In some competitions riders can clock about 3.3km distance in three and a half minutes – the sport is built on speed.
Jacob Nelson, another student of St Paul’s, was also named Sportsman of the Year at the same event, for his ability in Inline Hockey.
