In recognition of this year’s sporting and cultural talent, students attended the St Paul’s Sports and Culture Supreme Awards ceremony last week.
Lwamba Chileshe and Kate Littlejohn were crowned the top sportsman and sportswoman of the year.
Squash player Lwamba, has just recently qualified to A1 grade. He was selected for the New Zealand junior world team that won the plate final, and was in the New Zealand young Kiwis, New Zealand secondary schools and Waikato senior men’s squads. Lwamba also competed in the Waikato Secondary Schools team and was an individual winner. He is ranked third in both national and Oceania under-19s.
Nominated based on her performance in rowing and netball, Kate was in the crew that made up the St Paul’s coxed IV team that went on to win the Dawn Cup – the blue ribbon event for girls at Maadi Cup. This crew gained a bronze at the North Island secondary schools championships. Kate and Grace Watson made up the under-18 pair that narrowly missed out on gold by one second at the North Island championships. Kate and Grace were also selected to represent New Zealand at the junior world rowing championships in Lithuania in August, where they made the final and were placed 6th in the world. For netball, Kate was selected to represent the New Zealand Māori secondary schools team but had to withdraw because of her commitments to the New Zealand junior rowing crew. She was a training partner in the Magic Beko netball squad and was part of the St Paul’s netball team that ranked ninth at the national championships.
Students are nominated for the awards by their teachers/coaches. Following that, it goes to the sports committee made up of senior management who make the final decisions.

Cole Cup (for most outstanding performance in an individual’s chosen sport): Kate Littlejohn
