Thirty schools gathered at the University of Waikato for the annual wacky ChemQuest competition which quizzes students with obscure chemistry questions that relate chemistry to pop culture, music, video games and facts.
This year, the competition consisted of more than 75 teams who were all hungry for the coveted James & Wells Patent Attorney Trophy and cash prizes.
St Paul’s entered three teams, all of which placed in the top 12 and with one student, Jimmie Christey, taking out the first prize for the night after showing off his quick thinking skills and athleticism.
After the final round of questions, which included exploding hydrogen balloons, the students enjoyed plentiful pizza and drinks while anxiously awaiting the results.
James Krippner, Jimmy Christey and Craig Stocker placed second taking home silver medals and $120; Tully Dickson, Tom Wilson and Craig Scott finished ninth; and Nathan Cleaver, Blair Foster and Campbell Massey finished eleventh.
