The annual Waimaths Mathematics Competition was held at the Hamilton Gardens on 12 August with the top three mathematicians from several Waikato schools competing.
Each team was given 20 questions which they worked on with only forty five minutes to complete. A correct answer on the first go was worth three points, two points if correct on the second attempt and one point if correct on the third attempt.
The Year 9 St Paul’s team consisting of Joseph Chen, Youngmin Goo and Matthew Shewan placed fifth out of 25 teams. The Year 10 team consisting of Sheng Cao, Bill Li and Samuel Wollerton won their event against 21 schools competing. This is the third year in a row that St Paul’s Collegiate School has won the Year 10 shield. The Year 11 team consisting of Linda Lin, Belinda Pederson and Conor Robson placed fourth equal with 20 teams competing at this year level. Mr Judkins, Mrs Hastie and Mrs Visage were very pleased with how all three teams handled the pressure.
