Playing into a strong head wind, St Paul’s struggled for field position and possession going 12 minutes without touching the ball!
Eventually, weight of possession told and Gisborne scored a converted try. St Paul's eventually won some much needed possession and after a good build up, Tyrell Martin scored an excellent 30m solo try.
Gisborne struck back with two further penalties, to lead at half time 13-7.
St Paul’s started the second half with greater urgency. Tom Yarrall was put in space down the right hand touch line and was tackled just short of the try line but popped an excellent ball up to Trent Collingwood who score in the corner.
Gisborne again hit back to extend the lead to 20-12. Late in game, St Paul’s mounted a sustained attack and was awarded a try after strong work by the forwards.
The game finally ended, with Gisborne winning 20-17.
The tough game was just what the team needed before heading into their traditional game against Palmeston North Boys High School on Good Friday.
