With both teams unbeaten before the match, a close game was expected. St Paul’s opened the scoring from an Aaron Humble penalty. Hamilton Boys High hit back scoring a try from a lineout drive, and scored a penalty soon after to take an 8 -3 lead into half time. The game was very tight in the second half with both teams struggling to dominate in the bad weather conditions. With 10 minutes left and after a period of pressure Lachie Finch drove over the line to score close to the post, Matthew Caskey converted for St Paul’s to take a 10-8 lead. St Paul’s held off continued attacks in the remaining 10 minutes to win 10-8.
Lachie Finch was the stand out player for St Paul’s, his try and some key turns over were the difference in a tight match.
