Violist Emi Ng (Year 13) has been selected for the New Zealand National Youth Orchestra (NYO).
NYO is a prestigious developmental orchestra reserved for the country’s most talented musicians under 25-years-old.
Although she considers the violin her main instrument, Emi decided to audition for NYO on the viola “as a challenge.”
Emi picked up the viola in Year 10 after she returned from playing with the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra.
“Hearing it played in a full orchestra piqued my interest. I had a go on a friend’s viola and was hooked straight away.”
Emi will join fellow St Paul’s student and violinist, Victoria Chanwai (Year 12), in July as the pair attend a week-long workshop which concludes with a public performance at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington and the Auckland Town Hall.
