Fifteen-year-old Katie Trigg (Year 12) is blessed with real talent, and is always happy to share it with the old folk at Kaitaia rest home Switzer Residential Care. The Waikato teenager did so again over Christmas, while she was visiting her grandparents, diversional therapist Georgina Atkin describing her as a delight, with a rich and beautiful voice well beyond her years.
Katie has been singing ( including busking) since she was eight, as a means of raising money for her tuition. She has already played leading operatic roles and has won numerous accolades, including a 2014 Waipa Youth Award (with merit) in the arts and culture section. She joined the Waikato University Junior Music Academy vocal programme in 2012, and plans to study performance music there when she finishes high school.
Her performance at Switzer comprised 15 songs, including I Dreamed a Dream (from Les Miserable), Danny Boy, Pokarekareana, Ave Maria and Time to Say Goodbye.
“It was a moving performance enjoyed by all,” Georgina said.
