Some 270 students from 30 Asian countries/regions have been selected to participate in the 2015 Asian Science Camp in Bangkok and Non Seehamart is one of them.
The Asian Science Camp will be held from 2-8 August and is only offered to those who show the most promise in science at the senior secondary school and early tertiary level.
Non was selected as one of five students by Rotary New Zealand who will represent NZ at the forum.
At the week-long event, students will hear lectures from five Nobel Prize winning scientists, including Professor Harald zur Hausen who won the Nobel Prize in 2008 for his research of the human papilloma virus which discovered that the virus causes cervical cancer. His research directly resulted in the development of the HPV vaccine which was introduced to the commercial market in 2006.
Non plans to study pre-med as a pathway to medicine at the University of Auckland next year so lectures from the likes of Professor Harald zur Hausen will be of great interest to the 17-year-old who is still undecided on what area of medicine he will specialise in.
Students will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a full day allocated to laboratory tours.
Rotary New Zealand will cover 70 per cent of the cost associated with the trip with Non fundraising to pay the remaining 30 per cent.
