24 August 2015

More than 300,000 students from 1000 schools across the globe competed in the Language Perfect World Championships, an online language competition that ran 24/7 from 18 May to 28 May.

During the competition students answered as many questions as possible in their chosen language – Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, German, Japanese, Maori, Greek, Latin, Italian and Indonesian.

Thirty-three St Paul’s Collegiate School students competed in the French and Spanish division, gaining certificates at the credit, bronze, silver, gold and elite levels.

Stand-out results of the competition were from Year 12 St Paul’s students Conor Fuller and Fizzi Whale. Conor placed first in New Zealand and fourth in the world in Spanish, placing him in the top 0.2% of the competition. Fizzi also ranked in the top 0.2%, placing sixth in New Zealand and tenth in the world.

Conor headed overseas shortly after the competition to take part in a five month language exchange in Argentina.

Kathy Hastie (Year 11), Kamsan Govender (Year 10), Divakrin Naicker (Year 10) and Patrick Dowd (Year 10) all gained gold level achievements placing them in the top 2% of competitors. Aash Kansal (Year 12), Grace Li (Year 11) and Mirjam Mayer (Year 12, who is completing German by correspondence) also placed in the top 0.2% like Conor and Fizzi.
