The Ambassador of Israel, Yosef Levne, visited St Paul’s Collegiate School last week to speak with senior students and Year 10 students about the Holocaust.
St Paul’s Year 10 students, who have recently been studying the Holocaust, impressed the ambassador with their knowledge and insightful questions. Senior students asked searching questions about the historical event, adding to their understanding.
The ambassador was impressed with the students, especially Jack Fraser (Year 10) who met one-on-one with him after the lesson.
“Jack reminds me of myself as a student. A head full of so many questions that need to be answered. Curiosity is the basis of all good learning,” Ambassador Levne said.
Mr Defyd Williams, Teacher in Charge of History, arranged for the ambassador to visit after meeting him at a number of events over the past year.
Initially Mr Williams met Ambassador Levne at the Yad Vashem Holocaust seminar in Jerusalem in January this year. Yad Vashem is the world centre for documentation, research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust.
Mr Williams met with the ambassador for a second time when graduates of the seminar visited Wellington in September to share how the event had positively influenced their teaching of the holocaust.
