Cricket - 1st XI

v St Kentigern's

Date: Friday, 12 October 2012
Result: Won

Game One - 12th October

Despite losing an early wicket, St Pau'ls got off to a brisk start through Baxter Mackay 36 and Freddy Walker who was the mainstay of the innings with 42. Scott Finlayson continued the momentum with a bright 43 but got out just as the late innings charge was starting. James Chenery played well for 31 not out while Devon Nolan made 24 not out to see the team through to a respectable 229 for 5.

In the field, St Paul’s fielded very well taking two good run outs and a brilliant game changing catch by Devon Nolan helped to keep St Ken'ts on the back foot and struggling at 142 for 8. St Paul’s gave their eight different bowlers good spells but struggled with their line bowling 54 wides which helped St Kent's through to 216 all out. Malcolm Luman with 2 for 20 and Chenery 2 for 26 had the best figures as St Paul’s scored their first ever victory over St Kentigern's by 13 runs.

Player of the day was Freddy Walker.

Game Two – 13 October

Again batting first St Paul’s started brightly through Chris Fawcett 15 and Baxter MacKay 13 putting on 33 for the first wicket before a succession of poor footwork saw a collapse to 86 for 8. Thanks to a stoic innings of 22 by Freddy Walker, a gutsy 20 by James Chenery and a determined 16 by Guy Wilkins saw St Paul's through to 124 all out after 39 overs.

However it was the turn for the St Paul's bowlers to step up as they bowled much tighter lines than the previous day. Two excellent catches by Chenery in the slips and Joel Kosoof to remove St Kent's top batsman supported an excellent new ball bowling effort. Two early wickets to full bowling by Devon Nolan, outstanding bowling by Scott Finlayson with 4 for 19 and Freddy Walker 1 for 9 in 10 overs saw St Kent's reduced to 43 for 8. James Chenery then finished the tail with 2 for 9 as St Kent's were bowled out for 97 to win by 27 runs.

Player of day was Scott Finlayson.

These two wins represented St Paul's first victories over St Kent's since this traditional fixture started four years ago.
