In their final game of the year, St Paul’s Collegiate won the toss and elected to bat. Apart from Kippa Fawcett [29], Jacob Robb [27] and James Chenery [22] unfortunately we batted poorly only being able to muster up 158 in 43 overs against the tight and accurate Matamata attack. Four players were adjudged LBW which did not help the cause owing to poor footwork and shot selection.
Matamata College took up the challenge from ball one and scored freely to give St Paul’s a comprehensive hiding by 9 wickets. A very disappointing result to what has otherwise been a fine overall season – the team winning 11 out 13 games including a number of "big fish" such as St Kentigerns, Wanganui Collegiate and St Peter's.
We acknowledge the significant contribution of James Chenery [captain – over 100 wickets and 70 games ], Freddy Walker [vice captain – over 100 wickets, one century and 65 games], Malcolm Luman [ 75 games] and Baxter Mackay [one century] as they leave the team. We wish them all the best for the future.
Garth Littlejohn also stands down after his second term as coach of the 1st XI. The school, boys and parents are sincerely appreciative of the significant sacrifice he has made in coaching the team and wish him well in his new role. He should now have more time to spend with his family.
