The u55 Gold team again came up against a well-coached and skillful Te Awamutu side in the final of the Waikato u55kg championship.
We knew that it was going to be a hard and tightly contested game it turned out to be exactly that.
Te Awamutu scored first through their second five and converted to lead 7-0.
We fought back hard and scored a try by Li Kun Cao after a good lineout drive. We missed the kick and the score was 7-5.
Not long after they scored again and were up 14-5.
In the second half we used the wind really well, with Dante Parata kicking us into good positions to launch attack from.
The continued pressure and having all the territory allowed Captain Gus Hanham to score. Josh Gullery converted from an impossible position, judging the strong wind to perfection.
We continued to dominate the second half and Te Awamutu nearly never made it into our half.
We came close to scoring again, but to Te Awamutu’s credit, their defence held strong.
When the final whistle went, we were disappointed not to win, but the boys played the best game of the year and should be proud.
