Rugby - 1st XV

v Wesley College
Chiefs Cup

Date: Saturday, 14 May 2016 at 12.00pm
Venue: St Paul's Collegiate
Result: Won
Score: 39-10

In the second round of the Chiefs Cup the 1st XV took on Wesley College. The boys got off to the worst possible start conceding a soft try in the first minute of the game. Form this moment on however, it was all one way traffic with St Paul’s dominating every facet of the game especially in the forwards. After 10 minutes, St Paul’s scored their first try with Ashton Finau crossing the line after some impressive driving play by the forwards. George Dyer scored our second shortly after again as a result of some good work by the forwards. To seal an excellent half Valynce Crosby-Te Whare dotted down in the corner and the Ferg Burke kicked a sideline conversion to give St Paul’s a 24-5 lead at half time.

The second half proved to be a tighter affair but St Paul’s were still able to score two more tries to Josh Balme and Tom Yarrall. A try was conceded towards to end of the match but this didn’t disguise the dominance that St Paul’s had and the final score was a very comfortable 39-10 win to St Paul’s. This was perhaps the best performance from the 1st XV in a number of years and the boys should be very proud of their efforts. They face another tough test this weekend with an away trip to Tauranga Boys, who are always a strong side. A win in this fixture would see St Paul’s qualify for the Chiefs Cup final.
