v Rotorua Boys High School
Chiefs Cup

Date: Saturday, 16 May 2015
Venue: St Paul's Collegiate
Result: Lost
Score: 33-46

The 1st XV faced a tough challenge in the form of Rotorua Boys on Saturday in a virtual semi-final of the Chiefs Cup. The team got off to a poor start and after only ten minutes were 8-0 down. However, as the half progressed the boys got more and more into the game despite some aimless kicking at times. Ferg Burke kicked three penalties and with ten minutes to go before the break St Paul's was ahead 9-8. A try to Tom Yarrell extended the lead close to the break but Rotorua managed to score try on the stroke of half time. Half time score 16-13.

St Paul's made the best possible start to the second half with an early try to Samisoni and team was looking good. However, a couple of quick tries to Rotorua swung the monument back to in their favour. The second of these two tries was crucial as St Paul’s were virtually certain to score if the Rotorua winger hadn’t managed to intercept the final pass.

Blake Wilson managed to score a consolation try in the last play of the game to make the final score 46-33. The final score didn't reflect the very even nature of the game and the boys were disappointed to let slip a victory against a school that is traditionally one of the best in New Zealand.

This weekend the teams take on old foes Hamilton Boys High School in the play off for 3rd and 4th in the Chiefs Cup. The date and venue for this match is still to be confirmed.
