The colts produced easily their best performance of the season beating a talented Francis Douglas side. Alex Johnson the stand in captain for the day won the toss and elected to bowl. Francis Douglas got off to a reasonable start and were 30 without loss after 8 overs. The introduction of George Ott however, proved disastrous for Francis Douglas. Ott proceed to rip apart the heart of their batting with a simply brilliant display of leg break bowling. By the time Ott had finished his spell he had claimed the sensational figures of 8-29. Francis Douglas were dismissed shortly afterwards for only 109. Ott’s figures were the best by a St Paul’s student in any team for nearly ten years.
In reply St Paul’s made hard work of chasing such a small target. However, Alex Johnson batted with a great deal of composure to make an excellent 46 and Christian Neethling and George Fullerton-Smith fought hard at the end to bring the game home for St Paul’s. The team won by a comfortable but hard fought four wicket margin. Special praise must go to Alex Johnson for leading the team so well at such short notice.
