The evening brought together delegates, families, and performers from the local Chinese community, transforming the Chapel into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration.
The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn or Reunion Festival, holds a special meaning for Chinese people living in New Zealand. It is a time to reflect on family connections, with the full moon symbolising unity and reunion with loved ones across the globe. The gala has been an annual tradition in Hamilton since 2006, becoming a highly anticipated event that highlights the richness of Chinese culture and its contributions to New Zealand’s multicultural landscape. For 19 years, Roy Zhu’s (Year 12) parents, Zhu Xi and Yi Li, have organised the event, bringing together people from China and New Zealand for a special evening.
This year’s event featured a stunning line-up of professional artists from China, alongside talented members of the local Chinese community. Attendees were treated to a diverse array of performances, including singing, dancing, musical instruments, acrobatics, and even magic. The evening’s cultural showcase captured the essence of the Moon Festival, with each performance offering a glimpse into the traditions and artistry that make the festival so unique.
Distinguished guests such as Consul General CHEN Shijie, Minister of Parliament Ryan Hamilton, Mayor Paula Southgate, and other dignitaries attended the event, adding to the evening’s prestige. Their presence, along with hundreds of community members, highlighted the importance of this celebration in fostering connections and honouring shared traditions.
While St Paul’s was proud to provide the venue for this beautiful evening, the event’s success was a testament to the dedication of the Chinese community in Hamilton. The school is privileged to have played a part in hosting this important cultural gathering and looks forward to supporting future events that celebrate the diversity of our community.
