St Paul’s Collegiate School took two teams to the Waikato/Bay of Plenty regional TeenAg competition in Huntly on Saturday, which is the secondary school equivalent of the Young Farmer of the Year competition.
St Paul’s two teams – consisting of Amber Humphreys, Donna Smit, Brad Edwards and Quinn Bowie – competed against 20 other schools in two events.
The first event was made up of eight modules, including:
- loading and tying down a trailer
- identifying alpaca fibre
- sorting sugar and calories in drinks
- safety and identifying risks
- seed identification.
The top five teams of this event, including St Paul’s Musterers Brad and Quinn, then went on to compete in a ‘face off.’ For this event, teams had to complete three tasks in 15 minutes. The tasks were putting up a tent, building furniture from four planks of wood and erecting a fence. St Paul’s Musterers scored the most points for putting up a tent and for working together as a team. Their fence building also ranked very high.
St Paul’s Musterers placed second overall across the two events, securing a space at the national TeenAg competition on 7 July in Timaru which will run alongside the Young Farmer of the Year competition.
