St Paul’s Collegiate School made its second annual pilgrimage to the Bay of Islands to explore the beginnings of the nation named New Zealand. The 18 students included prefects, the Chapel team and Year 12 and 13 historians. The theme of the year at the Dawn Service consisted of prayers for building the nation, by bringing our cultures together. Reverend Luccock was invited into the Wharenui to join the special guests, which included Prime Minister John Key, illustrating the significant role that the early missionaries played in translating and presenting the Treaty of Waitangi. Students and staff explored several churches in the area and this year's trip was characterised by quiet comtemplation. Visiting graveyards, battle sites and the famous hill at Kororareka, where Hone Heke cut the flagpole down, helped bring our country's story vividly to life.
St Paul’s student Sam Kaelin got to speak to Kim Hill, Radio New Zealand, about his experiences and the trip to Waitangi.
